Deluxe Junque
Tell me about yourself.
Baltimore Maryland based Deluxe Junque is a partnership between me (chris) and my twin sister Rae. We both have other 'real' jobs that we work all day and spend our nights and weekends researching, creating and promoting. We work out of my home and I'd bet my boyfriend would say we are hard working, perfectionists that can be a little obsessive. Well who isn't?
What do you make? What are your favorite materials to work with? What is your favorite color?
With a love of pretty much everything having to do with the 1940's - 1960's Mid Century America, designing purses and accessories w/ a retro, vintage, kitsch feel was a no-brainer! We mainly work w/ cotton for our tote bags, clutches and wristlets yet we do have plans to experiment w/ vinyl this Spring & Summer. Something I am REALLY looking forward to. Favorite colors right now are pinks, while black & white are always a staple.
Where can people purchase your goods?
Deluxe Junque swag can be purchased at a few places online, www.deluxejunque.com , www.deluxejunque.etsy.com , www.luckykat.net , an auction site or two and on our Myspace page: www.myspace.com/retromart . This past fall, we excitedly accepted our first wholesale account in Washington DC - Meeps Vintage Fashionette. With requests for wholesale information rising, who knows, you may be able to find Deluxe Junque in your town soon! You can also find us at local car/bike/kustom kulture shows in the MD & PA area during the summer months.
what is your favorite thing you have ever created?
It's hard to say what my favorite is. Everytime we introduce a new style or fabric choice, that item automatically becomes my favorite because it's so new and fresh. Right now, if I was to purchase something we sold, I'd have to say it would be the Bloody Bats Wristlet!
What is the worst thing you have ever created?
Worst item created? Nothing yet! Get back to us after we've been around a bit longer and I'm sure we'll have some duds to talk about!
What inspires you to create?
Inspiration is all around us every single day. We get ideas from all over. A movie we’ve just watched, a show we’ve just been to, or just a conversation will get our creative juices flowing. Once we start though it’s hard to stop, we can just keep going and going.
What is your favorite film/music/book/artist?
Favorite films vary from mobster flicks, to kitschy B movies from the 50's, Faster Pussycat Kill Kill, Cry Baby, The Outsiders, Casino, Breakfast at Tiffany's, just to name a few. Music? I'm all over the place as well, from rockabilly, to swing, to 80's new wave/punk rock, to southern rock, to classic hip-hop, to rock-n-roll: A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, Elvis, AC/DC, The Cure, Depeche Mode, The Stray Cats etc. etc. etc.
Who is the most important person in your life?
I don't have just 1 most important person in my life, there are 3 people, my sister of course, my boyfriend of 10 years and my dad. If it wasn't for all 3 of them, I wouldn't be the person I am today.
Who is your favorite DiY designer?
There are so many talented and crafty DIY designers out there, there is no way I could pick just one. Plus, imagine all the talent I have yet to find?
Do you have any advice for other DiY designers?
I say do what you love and love what you do! Do not give up, stay focused and you will preservere. When things get hectic, take a break, clear your head and jump right back in. You only get out of it what you put into it, so keep creating and promoting your work because you never know where your next sale will come from!
