Tell me about yourself. my name is caitlyn davey. i'm originally from upstate NY, though i currently live in portland, oregon. i graduated from massachusetts college of art in 2004 with a concentration in metal and glass. my passions alternate between fashion/art and science/technology. you can read about various fusions of these themes on my blog: http://discomedusa.typepad.com i am slowly chipping away at required courses towards another degree- in either microbiology or medical technology. however, that pursuit is on the back burner as i have recently become a stay-at-home-mom. part of the preparations for my son's birth included setting up my home studio and developing a production line of jewelry. hopefully, this small business venture will grow and continue feed me and my family (as his appetite increases!) What do you make? What are your favorite materials to work with? What is your favorite color? i work in an aesthetic i think of as 'industrial-organic'- organic forms rendered with industrial materials. though sometimes i veer into simple modern design as a tangent... i make jewelry using mostly precious metals. i am currently hording reclaimed materials to incorporate into my work, but i haven't finished any of those pieces yet- stay tuned! when i have the resources, i particularly like working with glass. it's so sensual and satisfying... anything with circles will definitely catch my eye. as for colors, i am usually attracted exclusively to black and earth tones, though i have an unusual penchant for bright green and red or magenta. in which i was able to successfully incorporate recycled elements (the bicycle brake cable housing) i'd like to work more with reclaimed materials. What is the worst thing you have ever created? ugh, a hideous copper fountain thingy. hate it. therefore, no photos! What inspires you to create? i marvel at physical existence and the evolution of processes. i create in celebration of being alive and capable. plus, i need to eat. What is your favorite film/music/book/artist? film: the life aquatic with steve zissou music: johnny cash, john zorn, snog, scorn book: snowcrash, the baroque cycle (both by neal stephenson) artist: bathsheba grossman Who is the most important person in your life? that would be my 7 month old son, corbin. my parter, peter, comes in a close second. Who is your favorite DiY designer? i adore the designers who repurpose second hand clothing and other recycled elements. i respect that so much! though i can't think of one in particular. my current favorite etsy seller would have to be tosca teran. she is an amazing jeweler, her designs are dead-on what i love to look at, and she's very generous with sharing her vast knowledge. another designer i adore is rebecca turbow. we went to school together and i've really enjoyed watching her grow as a designer and enjoy much-deserved success. besides, her style is so stunningly well-defined and applied with such flair.
