Tell me about yourself.
I am Krista and I am originally from Newfoundland, but I know live in the amazing city of Toronto, with my husband and my little dog. I am a semi professional craftster trying to make this my full time job. I am an extrovert who loves fabric shopping, thirft store shopping and just being outside. I would describe myself as eclectic, I am into a variety of fashion styles and I just wearing what I want, when I feel like it. I also like to drink and dress like a pirate.
What do you make? What are your favorite materials to work with? What is your favorite color?
I make all kinds of things. I started originally making pvc cheerleader skirts and selling them on ebay, then I moved to the hair accessories because I could make them from the left over scraps and now I make jewelry, houseware, dog toys etc. I guess my line is best known for the hair accessories. My favourite materials to work with are vinyls, pvc, plastics, mesh, anything fun and funky. I love pvc and vinyl, I am actually addicted to them. If you know of a self help group for vinyl addicts let me know I have a few "favorite colors"- red, silver, black, white (hmmm I guess only one is really a color).
Where can people purchase your goods?
You can purchase my goods at a variety of places. You can check out my website: http://www.pixiefashions.com or my esty store http://pixiefashions.etsy.com or they are also available at various retail stores in the US, Canada, and Europe. If your in NY you can find them at Trash and Vaudeville and I think there is a list on my website under Info of more retail stores.
what is your favorite thing you have ever created?
Hmm my most favorite thing?? I have lots of favorite things that I have made, but most I don't have pictures for. I think right now my little voodoo dolls are my favorite. They are made of glow in the dark pvc and I love them.
I also love religious imagery and so I have been playwith that lately too.
What is the worst thing you have ever created?
Hmm the worse thing. I think that would have to be a skirt I made that was so butt ugly I just had to chop it up and use it for something else. It seemed like a great idea in my head but it just didn't work in fabric. Sorry no pictures.
What inspires you to create?
Lots of things. I love art, I love studing art and I love making art. I am also a Newfoundlander and crafting seems to be breed into me. I have also made things especially with scraps of fabric and found items, so it seemed natural that this would be what I am doing. Fabrics also inspire me. If I find a great pvc I usually try and think of something to make with it.
What is your favorite film/music/book/artist?
Ok here is where the electic comes. My favorite film would be Amadeus. For music, I like a bunch of stuff, old school punk, goth, industrial, rockabilly, Irish punk and of course lets not forget some good ol Johnny Cash and Tom Waits. For books, I will read most anything if it is good. I like cheesy horror best and noire mystery books. My all time favorite artists would be Caravaggio and Frida Kahlo. I like the renaissance, dada, and of course art deco/nouveau.
Who is the most important person in your life?
I have two, my husband Simon and my little dog hector.
Do you have any advice for other DiY designers?
Do what makes you happy. I love making stuff, but everynow and again (espeically with wholesale) its gets boring, so I try and take a break and make something new and fun. If you aren't having fun it isn't worth it. Also keep at it. Sometimes it takes a while to get a name and a fan base going. Also promote, promote, promote.
Who is your favorite DiY designer?
Wow I have lots. I have a lot of friends who are designers so they are among my favorites, Bice, Jodi Green, Lulu Bell. If you want go check out my etsy page for my favorites

Yay its me Thanks so much for the promo, sorry for the spelling mistakes. As for glitter vinyl if you are in the US you can get it online from Hancocks or there are some ebay sellers who have it. I have no idea where to get it in Canada unfortunately. |
