Tell me about yourself.
My name is Craig Hunter, and I live alone in the museum district of Houston, Texas. If I had to describe myself to others, I'd list these things: I'm very energetic and talkative; I think my laptop is my heterosexual life parter (we're inseparable); I'm easily distracted; I'm sentimental; I'm unorganized and mess, but not dirty; I'm always eager to learn something new; I'm 5'8"; I'm a good dancer; I'm funny; and I watch too much television (right now I'm partial to judge shows and 'Law and Order' and the local news and "The Simpsons"). Also, I'm a student, a radio DJ (I have a spoken word show), and I'm in an experimental-improv band called Ladies Who Lunch.
What do you make? What are your favorite materials to work with? What is your favorite color?
The main focus of my shop is clothing, specifically applique designs. However, I also sell handknit items, collage art, music I've written, 1" buttons, and occasionally silkscreened designs. I have no favorite color (I think they all have their moments), but I do have favorite materials: felt, glue, tape, paint, words and language, Sharpies, and that's it.
Where can people purchase your goods?
Cubist Literature clothing, art, and music can all be found on Etsy, home to thousands of great shops. http://cubistliterature.etsy.com
what is your favorite thing you have ever created?
I'm not too sure, but this morning I woke up thinking about a cummerbund belt I made back in July. I think I really liked it because it was an example of me taking a new step as a designer (and also it proved to me that I was getting better at using the sewing machine). I'd wanted and I STILL want to be more imaginative and daring with the designs I come up with.
What is the worst thing you have ever created?
I really couldn't say, though I remember when I first began selling on Etsy, I'd feel nervous everytime I packed an order because I felt like my product wasn't good enough. I guess the main cause of that was that I hadn't really gotten a feel for using the sewing machine. I'm sort of a perfectionist, so if I have an idea of what I want something to look like, I want that idea successfully fulfilled. I'm too hard on myself.
What inspires you to create?
The satisfaction! I love the idea and act of creating something with my own hands. It's a great feeling. So much so that I am having answering this question...
What is your favorite film/music/book/artist?
Favorite films: Ordinary People, Clueless, Fargo, Halloween
Favorite music: avant-garde, riotgrrl, noise, art-punk, experimental, modern classical, electronic
Favorite books: A Room of One's Own, Dead Man Walking, Catcher in the Rye
Favorite artists: Cy Twombly and Miranda July
Who is the most important person in your life?
I can't pick just one person. It's impossible. The most important PEOPLE in my life are my family and friends because they have helped and inspired me in so many ways they'll never fully know.
Who is your favorite DiY designer?
Since my shop is based on Etsy.com, I've so many favorites. Right now I'm really digging Lorimarsha's shop. And Stopsandstarts and RuffeoHeartsLil'Snotty will always have a soft spot in my heart.
Do you have any advice for other DiY designers?
If you want to be a success, I've one word for you: networking! Meet other designers/artists and keep in touch with them, as they will be able to help you one day. You will see that you can't do EVERYTHING yourself, so you'll need those contacts.
